Posted on June 28, 2025

Here’s a classic Washboard Cookies recipe for you! These cookies are known for their crisp texture and the distinctive ridged “washboard” pattern on top.

Washboard Cookies Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • Extra granulated sugar for rolling or sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  2. Cream butter and sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy.

  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.

  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.

  6. Scoop dough into small balls (about 1 tablespoon each) and place on prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart.

  7. To create the “washboard” pattern, press the back of a fork down onto each ball, then drag it across to form ridges. Repeat in the perpendicular direction to make a crosshatch pattern.

  8. Lightly sprinkle the tops with granulated sugar for extra crunch and sparkle (optional).

  9. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.

  10. Remove from oven and let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
