Washboard Cookies Recipe
Ingredients:
-
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
-
3/4 cup granulated sugar
-
1 large egg
-
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
-
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
-
1/4 teaspoon salt
-
Extra granulated sugar for rolling or sprinkling
Instructions:
-
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
-
Cream butter and sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
-
Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
-
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
-
Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
-
Scoop dough into small balls (about 1 tablespoon each) and place on prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
-
To create the “washboard” pattern, press the back of a fork down onto each ball, then drag it across to form ridges. Repeat in the perpendicular direction to make a crosshatch pattern.
-
Lightly sprinkle the tops with granulated sugar for extra crunch and sparkle (optional).
-
Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
-
Remove from oven and let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
