Here’s a classic Tennessee Onions recipe — sweet, caramelized onions with a Southern twist. Perfect as a side dish or topping!
Tennessee Onions Recipe
Ingredients:
-
4 large onions (yellow or sweet), thinly sliced
-
3 tablespoons butter
-
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
-
2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
-
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
-
1/4 cup water or chicken broth
-
Salt and pepper, to taste
-
Optional: a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of cayenne for a little kick
Instructions:
-
Heat Butter & Oil: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter with the vegetable oil.
-
Cook Onions: Add the sliced onions. Stir well to coat them with the butter and oil.
-
Caramelize: Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 15–20 minutes until soft and golden brown. If they start to stick, add a splash of water or broth to loosen them.
-
Add Sugar & Vinegar: Stir in the brown sugar (if using) and vinegar. This gives a nice balance of sweet and tangy.
-
Simmer: Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. The onions should be tender and flavorful.
-
Season: Add salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce or cayenne if using. Taste and adjust seasonings.
Serve: These Tennessee onions are great over grilled meats, burgers, sandwiches, or just as a side with mashed potatoes or cornbread.
