Tennessee Onions Recipe

Here’s a classic Tennessee Onions recipe — sweet, caramelized onions with a Southern twist. Perfect as a side dish or topping!


Tennessee Onions Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 large onions (yellow or sweet), thinly sliced

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)

  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar or white vinegar

  • 1/4 cup water or chicken broth

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Optional: a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of cayenne for a little kick


Instructions:

  1. Heat Butter & Oil: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter with the vegetable oil.

  2. Cook Onions: Add the sliced onions. Stir well to coat them with the butter and oil.

  3. Caramelize: Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 15–20 minutes until soft and golden brown. If they start to stick, add a splash of water or broth to loosen them.

  4. Add Sugar & Vinegar: Stir in the brown sugar (if using) and vinegar. This gives a nice balance of sweet and tangy.

  5. Simmer: Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. The onions should be tender and flavorful.

  6. Season: Add salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce or cayenne if using. Taste and adjust seasonings.


Serve: These Tennessee onions are great over grilled meats, burgers, sandwiches, or just as a side with mashed potatoes or cornbread.
