Shrimp and Sausage Cabbage Bowl with Rice

Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for a Shrimp and Sausage Cabbage Bowl with Rice:

Ingredients:

  • For the Rice:

    • 1 cup long-grain white rice (or brown rice if preferred)

    • 2 cups water or chicken broth

    • Pinch of salt (optional)

  • For the Shrimp and Sausage:

    • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined

    • 2 sausages (such as Andouille, smoked sausage, or any of your choice), sliced into rounds

    • 1 small head of cabbage, shredded (about 4 cups)

    • 1 medium onion, diced

    • 2 cloves garlic, minced

    • 1 bell pepper, diced

    • 2 tablespoons olive oil

    • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

    • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

    • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)

    • Salt and pepper to taste

    • 1/2 cup chicken broth (or water)

    • Juice of 1/2 lemon

    • Fresh parsley or green onions for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cook the Rice:

  • Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.

  • In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water or chicken broth to a boil.

  • Add the rice and a pinch of salt (if desired). Stir once, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it cook for about 18-20 minutes (or follow package instructions).

  • Once done, remove from heat and fluff with a fork. Set aside.

2. Cook the Sausage:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.

  • Add the sliced sausage and cook until browned on both sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.

3. Cook the Shrimp:

  • In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of olive oil.

  • Add the shrimp and cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, until they turn pink and are cooked through. Remove and set aside with the sausage.

4. Prepare the Vegetables:

  • In the same skillet, add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until softened.

  • Add the shredded cabbage and cook, stirring occasionally, for another 5-7 minutes until the cabbage begins to soften but still has some texture.

5. Combine Everything:

  • Add the sausage and shrimp back into the skillet with the cabbage and vegetables.

  • Season with smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.

  • Pour in the chicken broth and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the liquid has reduced and everything is well mixed.

  • Squeeze in the lemon juice and give it a final stir.

6. Assemble the Bowl:

  • To serve, spoon the cooked rice into bowls and top with the shrimp, sausage, and cabbage mixture.

  • Garnish with fresh parsley or chopped green onions if desired.

Tips:

  • For extra flavor, you can add a splash of hot sauce or a few dashes of Tabasco to the finished dish.

  • Feel free to use different types of sausage depending on your taste preferences (chicken sausage, chorizo, etc.).

  • If you want to make this dish spicier, you can add diced jalapeños to the vegetable mix.
