Here’s a classic homemade oyster cracker recipe — buttery, crunchy, and perfect for soups or snacking:
Homemade Oyster Crackers
Ingredients:
-
1 1/2 cups (180g) all-purpose flour
-
1 tsp sugar
-
1 tsp salt
-
1 tsp baking powder
-
2 tbsp unsalted butter, cold and cubed
-
1/2 cup (120ml) cold water (you may need a bit less)
Optional for flavor:
-
1/2 tsp garlic powder or onion powder
-
1/2 tsp dried herbs (e.g., dill, thyme, or parsley)
-
Sea salt for sprinkling on top
Instructions:
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder (plus optional flavorings if using).
-
Cut in butter: Add cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until it resembles coarse crumbs.
-
Add water: Slowly stir in cold water, a bit at a time, just until the dough comes together. Don’t overwork it.
-
Roll out: On a floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/8-inch thick.
-
Cut crackers: Use a small round cutter (about 1/2 inch) or just cut into small squares with a knife or pizza cutter.
-
Bake: Transfer crackers to the baking sheet, spacing slightly. Prick each with a toothpick or fork to prevent puffing.
-
Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden and crisp. Rotate the pan halfway through for even browning.
-
Cool: Let cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
