Orange Custard

Here’s a smooth, citrusy treat that’s light, creamy, and perfect for spring or summer: Orange Custard. It’s a bright, elegant dessert that blends the richness of custard with the refreshing zing of oranges.


🍊 Orange Custard Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4):

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 3 large egg yolks

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

  • Zest of 1 orange

  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (strained)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Pinch of salt

Optional toppings:

  • Whipped cream

  • Orange segments

  • Mint leaves

  • Grated chocolate or candied peel


Instructions:

1. Prepare the Milk Mixture:

  • In a saucepan, combine the milk and orange zest.

  • Heat gently over medium-low heat until warm (do not boil).

  • Remove from heat and let steep for 5–10 minutes.

2. Mix the Egg Base:

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt until smooth and pale.

3. Temper the Eggs:

  • Slowly pour the warm milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to avoid curdling.

  • Return the combined mixture to the saucepan.

4. Cook the Custard:

  • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens (about 5–8 minutes). Do not let it boil.

  • Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in the orange juice and vanilla extract.

5. Chill:

  • Pour the custard into small bowls or ramekins.

  • Cover with plastic wrap (press it directly onto the surface to prevent a skin).

  • Chill for at least 2–3 hours, or until set.

6. Serve:

  • Top with whipped cream, orange zest, or fresh orange slices if desired.


Tips:

  • Want it extra smooth? Strain the custard through a fine sieve before chilling.

  • For a firmer texture, reduce the orange juice slightly or add a touch more cornstarch.

  • This pairs beautifully with shortbread or vanilla wafers on the side.
