Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie

Posted on June 6, 2025

Here’s a classic Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie recipe β€” rich, creamy, and full of nostalgic flavor, just like Grandma used to make:

🍫 Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie

🧾 Ingredients:

  • 1 pre-baked 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

  • 1 Β½ cups granulated sugar

  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ΒΌ teaspoon salt

  • 3 large egg yolks

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

(Optional topping: whipped cream or meringue)

πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ Instructions:

  1. Pre-bake the Pie Crust:

    • Bake your pie crust according to package or recipe instructions and let it cool.

  2. Mix Dry Ingredients:

    • In a medium saucepan (off heat), whisk together the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, and salt.

  3. Add Eggs and Milk:

    • In a small bowl, beat the egg yolks slightly. Slowly whisk the egg yolks and milk into the dry mixture until smooth.

  4. Cook the Filling:

    • Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil β€” about 7–10 minutes.

    • Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.

  5. Assemble the Pie:

    • Pour the hot filling into the cooled pie crust. Smooth the top with a spatula.

  6. Chill:

    • Let the pie cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours (or overnight) until fully set.

  7. Serve:

    • Top with whipped cream or meringue, if desired. Slice and enjoy!
