Mozzarella-Stuffed Onion Rings with Garlic Butter

Posted on June 23, 2025

Here’s a delicious recipe for Mozzarella-Stuffed Onion Rings with Garlic Butter—crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and loaded with savory flavor:

🧅 Mozzarella-Stuffed Onion Rings with Garlic Butter

📝 Ingredients:

For the Onion Rings:

  • 2 large yellow or white onions

  • 8 oz (225 g) mozzarella cheese block (cut into thick strips)

  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup (100 g) breadcrumbs (panko preferred for extra crunch)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

For the Garlic Butter:

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley (fresh or dried)

  • Pinch of salt

🔪 Instructions:

1. Prep the Onion Rings

  • Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings (~1/2 inch).

  • Separate the rings and pair large outer rings with slightly smaller inner rings, leaving a gap between them.

  • Stuff the gap between each pair with a strip of mozzarella. Press gently so the cheese fits snugly. Freeze for 30–45 minutes until firm.

2. Prepare Dredging Station

  • Set up three bowls:

    • Bowl 1: flour (season with salt, pepper, paprika)

    • Bowl 2: beaten eggs

    • Bowl 3: breadcrumbs

3. Coat the Rings

  • Dip each frozen, stuffed onion ring in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs.

  • For extra crispiness, double-dip: back into egg, then breadcrumbs again.

  • Freeze again for 10–15 minutes before frying (helps maintain shape and prevents cheese leakage).

4. Fry the Onion Rings

  • Heat oil to 350°F (175°C).

  • Fry the rings in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.

  • Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

5. Make the Garlic Butter

  • In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

  • Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant (about 1 minute).

  • Stir in parsley and a pinch of salt. Remove from heat.

6. Serve

  • Drizzle the hot garlic butter over the fried mozzarella onion rings.

  • Serve with marinara, ranch, or aioli for dipping.

🔁 Tips:

  • Use panko for a crispier texture.

  • Add chili flakes to the garlic butter for a spicy kick.

  • Air fryer version? Spray coated rings with oil and cook at 400°F (200°C) for ~8–10 minutes, flipping halfway.
