Hungarian Chocolate Swirl Rolls

Posted on May 28, 2025

Hungarian Chocolate Swirl Rolls (also known as Csokis Csiga in Hungary) are tender, yeasted pastry rolls filled with rich chocolate and rolled into spirals, often enjoyed as a breakfast treat or dessert. Here’s a traditional-style recipe to make them at home:

🥐 Hungarian Chocolate Swirl Rolls (Csokis Csiga)

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 3 ¾ cups (450g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 packet (7g) instant yeast

  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the chocolate filling:

  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar

  • ½ cup (60g) unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened

  • Optional: ½ tsp cinnamon or a splash of rum for flavor

For brushing:

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting after baking

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough:

    • In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.

    • Add the warm milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla. Mix until a soft dough forms.

    • Knead for about 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.

    • Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 to 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.

  2. Prepare the Chocolate Filling:

    • Mix together the sugar, cocoa powder, and softened butter until smooth. Add cinnamon or rum if using.

  3. Roll and Fill:

    • On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle (about 12×18 inches or 30×45 cm).

    • Spread the chocolate filling evenly over the dough.

    • Roll up the dough tightly from the long edge to form a log.

    • Slice into 12–15 even pieces.

  4. Second Rise:

    • Place rolls on a parchment-lined baking tray or in a greased baking dish, spaced slightly apart.

    • Cover and let rise for another 30–45 minutes.

  5. Bake:

    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

    • Brush tops with beaten egg.

    • Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and baked through.

  6. Finish:

    • Let cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar if desired.

    • Best enjoyed warm, perhaps with a cup of coffee or tea!
