How To Clean Your Blinds Without Taking Them Off The Wall

Posted on August 18, 2025

Here’s a step-by-step guide (or “recipe”) for cleaning your blinds without removing them from the wall, whether they’re wood, faux wood, vinyl, or aluminum. This method is effective for both horizontal and vertical blinds.

🧼 “No-Take-Down” Blind Cleaning Recipe

🧾 What You’ll Need:

Supplies:

  • Microfiber cloths or dusting mitt

  • Vacuum cleaner with brush attachment

  • Bucket or bowl

  • Warm water

  • Dish soap (mild, non-abrasive)

  • White vinegar (optional, for greasy buildup)

  • Old sock or soft glove (optional)

  • Spray bottle (optional)

🧽 Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Close the blinds

  • Close the blinds so they’re flat in one direction (facing you).

  • For vertical blinds, just ensure they’re all aligned in one direction.

Step 2: Dry dusting

  • Use a microfiber cloth, duster, or vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment.

  • Start at the top and work your way down.

  • Wipe each slat side to side (for horizontal) or top to bottom (for vertical).

  • Optional: Use an old sock on your hand for better control.

Step 3: Flip and repeat

  • Rotate the blinds in the opposite direction to expose the other side.

  • Repeat the dry dusting process.

Step 4: Deep clean with soap solution

  • Mix a cleaning solution:

    • 1 quart warm water

    • 1 tsp mild dish soap

    • (Optional) Add 1-2 tbsp vinegar if dealing with grease (e.g., kitchen blinds).

  • Dip a clean cloth in the solution, wring it out so it’s damp, not dripping.

For each slat:

  • Wipe both the top and bottom sides.

  • Rinse cloth frequently.

  • If using a sock or glove, dip it in the solution and pinch each slat between your fingers.

Step 5: Dry the blinds

  • Use a dry microfiber cloth or towel.

  • Remove any moisture to prevent streaks or warping (especially on wood blinds).

🛑 Important Tips:

  • Wood blinds: Avoid excess moisture. Use only a slightly damp cloth and skip vinegar.

  • Fabric blinds or shades: Use a vacuum with upholstery brush. Spot clean with water + mild soap.

  • Stuck-on grime: Let a damp cloth sit on the slat for a few seconds before wiping.

⏱️ Maintenance Schedule:

  • Light dusting: Weekly or biweekly

  • Deep cleaning: Every 1–3 months depending on location (kitchen blinds need it more often)

Let me know the type of blinds you have or if you want a natural (DIY non-toxic) version of the cleaning solution.
