Horse Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the cake:

    • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

    • 2 ½ tsp baking powder

    • ½ tsp salt

    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

    • 2 cups granulated sugar

    • 4 large eggs

    • 1 tsp vanilla extract

    • 1 cup whole milk

  • For the frosting:

    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

    • 4 cups powdered sugar

    • 2 tsp vanilla extract

    • 2-4 tbsp milk or heavy cream

    • Food coloring (brown, black, white, or any colors you want for mane and details)

  • For decoration:

    • Chocolate chips, licorice, candy eyes, or anything you like to decorate the horse’s face and mane

Equipment:

  • Two 9-inch round cake pans

  • Knife for carving the horse shape

  • Piping bags and tips for frosting details (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

  4. Add eggs and vanilla: Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.

  5. Combine dry and wet: Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

  6. Bake: Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool completely.

  7. Carve the horse shape: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Using a sharp knife, carve the horse head and neck shape out of the two cakes combined (search for horse cake templates online if you want a guide).

  8. Prepare frosting: Beat the butter until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until you reach your desired consistency. Divide and color frosting for different parts (brown for body, black for mane, white for eyes, etc.).

  9. Frost the cake: Spread a thin crumb coat on the cake, chill for 15 minutes, then frost the cake smoothly with colored frosting.

  10. Decorate: Use piping bags or a knife to add mane, eyes, nostrils, and any other details. Add candies or chocolate chips for extra decoration.
