🍽️ Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
Ingredients:
For the Hamburger Steaks:
-
1 lb ground beef (80/20 works best)
-
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
-
1 egg
-
1/4 cup milk
-
1 small onion, finely chopped
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tsp salt
-
1/2 tsp black pepper
-
1 tsp mustard (optional)
For the Onion Gravy:
-
1 large onion, thinly sliced
-
2 tbsp butter
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Make the Hamburger Steaks:
-
In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and mustard (if using).
-
Mix gently until combined — don’t overwork the meat.
-
Form into 4 oval-shaped patties, about ¾ inch thick.
2. Sear the Patties:
-
Heat a skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium-high heat. Add a little oil if needed.
-
Sear the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, until nicely browned. They don’t need to be fully cooked through.
-
Remove patties and set aside.
3. Make the Onion Gravy:
-
In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Add butter and sliced onions.
-
Cook, stirring frequently, until onions are soft and golden brown (about 10 minutes).
-
Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to cook out the raw taste.
-
Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring. Add Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened (5–7 minutes).
-
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Simmer Together:
-
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
-
Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes, or until patties are cooked through (160°F internal temp).
Serving Suggestions:
Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles with a side of green beans or steamed broccoli.
