Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread

Posted on June 9, 2025

Here’s a classic Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread recipe — simple, hearty, and perfect for everyday use. This traditional white bread is fluffy on the inside with a golden crust and uses basic ingredients you probably already have.

🍞 Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Recipe

Ingredients (makes 2 loaves):

  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 2 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F / 45°C)

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

  • 1 tbsp salt

  • 2 tbsp butter or shortening (softened)

  • 6–7 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:

    • In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water.

    • Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.

  2. Mix the Dough:

    • Stir in salt and butter.

    • Gradually add flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.

    • When the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl, transfer it to a floured surface.

  3. Knead the Dough:

    • Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little flour if sticky, but avoid over-flouring.

  4. First Rise:

    • Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the top.

    • Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm spot until doubled, about 1 to 1.5 hours.

  5. Shape and Second Rise:

    • Punch down the dough and divide it in half.

    • Shape into loaves and place in two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.

    • Cover and let rise again until doubled, about 30–45 minutes.

  6. Bake:

    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

    • Bake for 30–35 minutes or until loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.

    • Optional: Brush with melted butter while hot for a softer crust.

  7. Cool:

    • Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack.

🧡 Tips:

  • Add 1 tbsp honey for a slightly sweeter flavor.

  • Swap out 1–2 cups of white flour for whole wheat flour for a heartier loaf.

  • This bread freezes well—slice and wrap in plastic, then freeze in a bag.
