Glow-in-the-Dark Ocean Jar

Posted on June 28, 2025

Here’s a fun and safe Glow-in-the-Dark Ocean Jar recipe — perfect for a sensory activity or decoration! You can make it glow using non-toxic materials, and it’s simple to assemble.

🌊 Glow-in-the-Dark Ocean Jar Recipe

🧂 Materials:

  • 1 clean clear jar (mason jar or plastic bottle with a lid)

  • Water

  • A few drops of blue food coloring or blue liquid watercolor

  • Glow-in-the-dark paint (non-toxic, water-based)

  • Optional: Glitter, small sea creature toys, tiny shells, sequins

  • Glow sticks (optional, for temporary glow)

  • A few drops of clear glue or baby oil (for slow motion effect)

  • A UV light/blacklight (to charge the glow paint or for best glowing effect)

🧪 Instructions:

  1. Paint glow-in-the-dark paint inside the jar:

    • Use a brush or cotton swab to dab or streak glow-in-the-dark paint along the inside walls of the jar. Let it dry completely.

    • Tip: Use different colors for a more magical effect.

  2. Add water to the jar (fill about ¾ full).

  3. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to tint the water like the ocean.

  4. Optional: Add clear glue or baby oil to create a swirling, slow-moving effect.

  5. Drop in glitter, tiny sea animals, plastic fish, or sequins for extra ocean vibes.

  6. (Optional) Crack a glow stick and add it to the water for instant glow. Make sure it’s sealed, or cut it open and pour (with caution, gloves, and adult supervision).

  7. Seal the lid tightly — hot glue around the rim if kids will shake it.

  8. Charge the glow-in-the-dark paint by placing it in sunlight or under a UV light for a few minutes.

🌟 How It Works:

The glow-in-the-dark paint absorbs light and glows when it’s dark. For maximum brightness, use a UV light to “charge” it. The water and add-ins give it the look of a tiny glowing ocean.
