Fried Green Tomatoes

Posted on June 12, 2025

Here’s a classic Fried Green Tomatoes recipe — crispy on the outside, tangy and tender on the inside.

🍅 Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3–4 medium green tomatoes (firm and unripe)

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup cornmeal

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional for extra crunch)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

🔪 Instructions:

  1. Slice the Tomatoes
Cut tomatoes into ¼- to ½-inch thick slices. Discard the ends.

  2. Prepare a Dredging Station

    • In one bowl: mix flour with salt, pepper, and cayenne.

    • In another: whisk egg and buttermilk together.

    • In a third: combine cornmeal and breadcrumbs.

  3. Dredge the Tomato Slices
    Dip each slice:

    1. First in the flour (coat both sides)

    2. Then in the egg/buttermilk

    3. Finally in the cornmeal/breadcrumb mix

  4. Fry the Tomatoes

    • Heat ½ inch of vegetable oil in a skillet (medium-high heat, around 350°F / 175°C).

    • Fry tomatoes in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.

    • Transfer to a paper towel–lined plate to drain.

  5. Serve
    Best hot! Great with:

    • Ranch, remoulade, or spicy mayo

    • As a side dish, or in sandwiches or burgers

✅ Tips:

  • Look for firm, fully green tomatoes (not underripe red ones).

  • Add a little hot sauce to the buttermilk for extra flavor.

  • If you want gluten-free: use gluten-free flour and cornmeal.
