Here’s a  recipe for Crispy Cheese Potato Bites – golden on the outside, cheesy and soft inside, and perfect as a snack, appetizer, or side dish.


🧀 CRISPY CHEESE POTATO BITES RECIPE

🔹 Yield: 25–30 bites

🔹 Prep Time: 20 minutes

🔹 Cook Time: 20 minutes

🔹 Total Time: 40 minutes


📝 INGREDIENTS:

For the Potato Mixture:

  • 3 medium potatoes (around 500g), boiled and peeled

  • 1 cup cheddar cheese (or mozzarella), grated

  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander or parsley, chopped

  • 2 tablespoons green onions or chives, chopped (optional)

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (or 1 minced garlic clove)

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)

  • Salt to taste (about 1/2 tsp)

  • 2 tablespoons cornflour or all-purpose flour (for binding)

For Coating:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 egg, beaten (or 3 tablespoons milk for vegetarian version)

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)

For Frying:

  • Oil for deep frying (or shallow frying/air-frying option below)


🍳 INSTRUCTIONS:

🔸 Step 1: Boil & Mash Potatoes

  1. Boil the potatoes until tender. Peel and mash them while still warm (but not hot).

  2. Ensure there are no lumps – smooth mash helps in shaping and consistent texture.

🔸 Step 2: Prepare the Filling

  1. To the mashed potatoes, add:

    • Grated cheese

    • Herbs (parsley/coriander, green onions)

    • Garlic powder, black pepper, chili flakes

    • Salt

    • Cornflour/flour for binding

  2. Mix everything thoroughly until it forms a dough-like consistency. If the mixture feels too soft, add an extra tablespoon of flour.

🔸 Step 3: Shape the Bites

  1. Take a tablespoon of the mixture and roll it into a ball or small oval (like tater tots).

  2. Continue until all the mixture is shaped.

🔸 Step 4: Breading

  1. Prepare 3 bowls:

    • Flour

    • Beaten egg (or milk)

    • Breadcrumbs

  2. Roll each potato bite in flour → dip in egg → coat in breadcrumbs.

  3. For extra crispiness, double coat: repeat the egg + breadcrumb steps once more.

🔸 Step 5: Chill (Optional but recommended)

  • Place coated bites in the fridge for 15–20 minutes to firm up. This helps maintain shape while frying.


🔥 COOKING OPTIONS:

✅ Deep Frying (Best Texture)

  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat.

  2. Fry 4–5 bites at a time until golden brown and crispy (about 2–3 minutes).

  3. Remove to a paper towel to drain excess oil.

✅ Shallow Frying

  • Use a non-stick skillet with 1/2 inch of oil. Turn frequently for even browning.

✅ Air Frying (Healthier Option)

  1. Preheat air fryer to 200°C (400°F).

  2. Spray bites with oil and air-fry for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway through.


🧂 SERVING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Serve hot with:

    • Spicy ketchup

    • Garlic mayo

    • Sour cream & chive dip

    • Mint chutney or ranch dressing


🔁 VARIATIONS:

  • Spicy version: Add chopped jalapeños or green chilies.

  • Cheese burst: Stuff a small cube of mozzarella in the center.

  • Vegan: Use plant-based cheese and plant milk for coating.
