Cottage cheese pie

Posted on September 17, 2025

Here’s a  Cottage Cheese Pie recipe — a comforting dessert or sweet breakfast dish that’s rich, slightly tangy, and beautifully creamy. This version is a baked pie with a buttery crust and a smooth cottage cheese filling.

🥧 Cottage Cheese Pie Recipe (Traditional Style)

📝 Ingredients:

For the crust:

  • 1 ½ cups (180g) all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup (115g) cold unsalted butter, cubed

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 3–4 tbsp ice-cold water

For the filling:

  • 2 cups (450g) cottage cheese (drained if watery)

  • ½ cup (120ml) sour cream or Greek yogurt

  • 2 large eggs

  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch or all-purpose flour (for thickening)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Zest of 1 lemon (optional, for brightness)

  • A pinch of salt

Optional Toppings:

  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

  • Fresh berries or fruit preserves

  • Honey drizzle

🍴 Instructions:

Step 1: Make the crust

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.

  2. Add cold butter cubes and cut them into the flour using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. Gradually add ice-cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing gently until the dough comes together.

  4. Shape the dough into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the filling

  1. In a blender or food processor, blend the cottage cheese until smooth (optional, but recommended for a creamy texture).

  2. In a bowl, combine the blended cottage cheese, sour cream, eggs, sugar, cornstarch, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and salt. Mix until smooth and uniform.

Step 3: Assemble the pie

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface into a circle about 11–12 inches in diameter.

  3. Fit it into a 9-inch pie dish, trim and flute the edges.

  4. Pour the cottage cheese filling into the crust and smooth the top.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Bake the pie for 45–55 minutes, or until the center is just set and the top is lightly golden.

  2. If the edges of the crust brown too quickly, cover them with foil during baking.

  3. Let the pie cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

🧊 Serving & Storage

  • Serve chilled or at room temperature.

  • Top with powdered sugar, honey, or fruit if desired.

  • Store in the fridge for up to 4 days.

🍽 Variations:

  • Add raisins or dried fruit soaked in rum or warm water to the filling.

  • Replace part of the sugar with honey or maple syrup for a different sweetness.

  • Use ricotta instead of cottage cheese for an Italian-style pie.
