Here’s a classic coleslaw recipe with detailed instructions, tips, and variations to suit different preferences.

πŸ₯¬ Classic Creamy Coleslaw Recipe

πŸ“ Ingredients:

For the Slaw:

  • 1/2 head green cabbage, finely shredded (about 4 cups)

  • 1/2 head red cabbage, finely shredded (about 4 cups)

  • 2 medium carrots, peeled and grated

  • 1/2 small red onion, finely sliced (optional)

For the Dressing:

  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise

  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

  • 1 tablespoon sugar (or honey for a natural sweetener)

  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed (optional but adds flavor)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste (start with 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper)

πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Vegetables

  1. Shred the cabbage using a sharp knife, mandoline slicer, or food processor.

  2. Grate the carrots using a box grater or food processor.

  3. Thinly slice the onion, if using.

πŸ’‘ Tip: To soften the cabbage slightly and make it easier to digest, sprinkle with a little salt and let sit for 10–15 minutes. Then squeeze out excess liquid before mixing with the dressing.

Step 2: Make the Dressing

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together:

    • 3/4 cup mayo

    • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

    • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard

    • 1 tbsp sugar

    • 1/2 tsp celery seed (if using)

    • Salt & pepper to taste

Step 3: Combine

  1. Add the shredded cabbage, carrots, and onion to the bowl with the dressing.

  2. Toss everything until well coated.

Step 4: Chill

  • Cover the coleslaw and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to 2 hours. This allows the flavors to meld and the cabbage to soften slightly.

Step 5: Serve

  • Give it a final toss and taste for seasoning before serving.

🍴 Serving Suggestions:

  • Perfect side dish for BBQs, fried chicken, pulled pork, or burgers.

  • Can also be used as a crunchy topping for tacos or sandwiches.

πŸ”„ Variations:

πŸ₯’ Vinegar-Based (No Mayo) Coleslaw:

  • Replace mayo with:

    • 1/4 cup olive oil

    • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

    • 1 tablespoon sugar

    • Salt and pepper to taste

🌿 Healthier Option:

  • Use Greek yogurt (or half yogurt, half mayo) instead of full mayo for a lighter version.

πŸ§„ Add-Ins for Flavor:

  • Fresh herbs like parsley or dill

  • Crushed garlic or garlic powder

  • JalapeΓ±o or chili flakes for heat

  • Chopped apples or pineapple for sweetness
