Chocolate Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 3 ½ cups (440g) all-purpose flour

  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)

  • ⅓ cup (67g) granulated sugar

  • ⅓ cup (75g) unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 large egg

For the chocolate cinnamon filling:

  • ½ cup (100g) brown sugar, packed

  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon

  • ½ cup (90g) semi-sweet chocolate chips or finely chopped chocolate

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

For the icing:

  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar

  • 2 tbsp cream cheese, softened (optional but recommended)

  • 1-2 tbsp milk or cream

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

1. Make the dough:

  • In a small bowl, sprinkle yeast over warm milk. Let it sit 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  • In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.

  • Add melted butter, egg, and the yeast mixture. Stir until combined.

  • Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes.

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.

2. Prepare the filling:

  • Mix brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.

  • Set aside the softened butter and chocolate chips.

3. Assemble rolls:

  • Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle about 16×12 inches.

  • Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough.

  • Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly on top.

  • Scatter chocolate chips evenly over the cinnamon sugar.

  • Starting from the longer side, tightly roll the dough into a log.

  • Cut into 12 equal pieces.

4. Second rise:

  • Place rolls cut-side up in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, leaving some space between each.

  • Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes, until puffy.

5. Bake:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Bake rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.

  • Remove from oven and cool slightly before icing.

6. Make the icing:

  • Whisk powdered sugar, cream cheese, vanilla, salt, and enough milk to make a smooth glaze.

  • Drizzle generously over warm rolls.

Tips:

  • For extra gooey rolls, add some chopped nuts or a bit more chocolate in the filling.

  • Serve warm for best texture and flavor.

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container, reheat gently before serving.
