Here’s a classic Chinese Onion Pepper Steak recipe — a savory stir-fry dish made with tender beef, sweet onions, and crisp bell peppers in a flavorful sauce. This is quick to make and perfect for a weeknight dinner!


🥩 Chinese Onion Pepper Steak Recipe

🔪 Ingredients:

For the beef:

  • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 1 tsp Shaoxing wine (optional, or dry sherry)

Vegetables:

  • 1 large onion, sliced into wedges

  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced

  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1-inch piece of ginger, minced

For the sauce:

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce

  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional for sweetness)

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

  • 1 tbsp water (for mixing with cornstarch)

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1/2 cup (120ml) beef broth or water

  • Black pepper to taste

For cooking:

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil


👨‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Marinate the beef:

    • In a bowl, combine beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and Shaoxing wine. Mix well and let sit for 10–15 minutes.

  2. Mix the sauce:

    • In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce (if using), sugar, black pepper, and beef broth. Dissolve 1 tbsp cornstarch in 1 tbsp water and stir into the sauce.

  3. Cook the beef:

    • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Sear the beef until browned (about 2 minutes), then remove and set aside.

  4. Stir-fry the vegetables:

    • Add the remaining oil, then stir-fry garlic and ginger for 30 seconds. Add onions and peppers. Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.

  5. Combine everything:

    • Return the beef to the pan. Pour in the sauce and toss to coat. Let the sauce simmer and thicken for about 1–2 minutes.

  6. Serve:

    • Serve hot over steamed white rice or noodles.


🍚 Tips:

  • Beef slicing tip: Freeze the beef for 20–30 minutes before slicing — it makes thin slicing much easier.

  • Veggie variation: Add mushrooms, snow peas, or broccoli for extra color and crunch.
