Black Folks Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

Posted on July 3, 2025

Here’s a classic Black folks sweet potato pie recipe that’s rich, smooth, and full of warm spices. It’s a cherished soul food dessert that’s simple and delicious!

Classic Sweet Potato Pie

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups mashed cooked sweet potatoes (about 2 medium sweet potatoes)

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk (or whole milk)

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger (optional)

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the sweet potatoes:
Bake or boil sweet potatoes until very tender. Peel and mash until smooth. Measure out 2 cups.

  2. Preheat the oven:
    Set oven to 350°F (175°C).

  3. Mix filling:
In a large bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, granulated sugar, brown sugar, evaporated milk, eggs, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt. Mix well until smooth and creamy.

  4. Pour into crust:
Pour the sweet potato mixture into the unbaked pie crust.

  5. Bake:
Bake for 55-65 minutes or until the pie is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. If the crust browns too quickly, cover edges with foil.

  6. Cool and serve:
Allow the pie to cool completely before slicing. Sweet potato pie tastes even better the next day!

Tips:

  • Use fresh sweet potatoes instead of canned for the best flavor.

  • Add a splash of bourbon or a tablespoon of orange zest for a twist.

  • Serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
