BBQ Grilled Prawns with Garlic, Lemon & Chilli

Posted on September 10, 2025

Here’s a  recipe for BBQ Grilled Prawns with Garlic, Lemon & Chilli — a simple, flavorful dish that’s perfect for summer or anytime you want a quick seafood treat!

Ingredients:

  • Prawns (large, peeled and deveined, tails on) – 500g (about 1 lb)

  • Garlic cloves – 4, finely minced

  • Fresh red chilli – 1, finely chopped (adjust to taste)

  • Lemon – 1 (zested and juiced)

  • Olive oil – 3 tablespoons

  • Fresh parsley or coriander – 2 tablespoons, finely chopped (optional)

  • Salt – to taste

  • Black pepper – to taste

  • Wooden or metal skewers – if using wooden, soak them in water for 30 minutes beforehand to prevent burning

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Marinade:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the minced garlic, chopped chilli, lemon zest, and lemon juice.

  • Add the olive oil and whisk everything together.

  • Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

  • Mix in the chopped parsley or coriander if using.

2. Marinate the Prawns:

  • Add the prawns to the marinade and toss well to coat.

  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (up to 2 hours). Don’t marinate for too long, as lemon juice can start “cooking” the prawns.

3. Prepare the Grill:

  • Preheat your BBQ grill to medium-high heat.

  • If using skewers, thread 4-5 prawns on each skewer.

4. Grill the Prawns:

  • Place the prawns on the grill.

  • Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the prawns turn pink and are just cooked through. Be careful not to overcook as prawns get rubbery quickly.

5. Serve:

  • Remove prawns from the grill.

  • Optionally drizzle a little more fresh lemon juice or olive oil over the top.

  • Garnish with extra chopped herbs if desired.

  • Serve immediately with extra lemon wedges on the side.

Tips:

  • You can serve these prawns with a side of grilled veggies, fresh salad, or crusty bread.

  • For extra smoky flavor, use a charcoal grill or add wood chips to your BBQ.

  • If you don’t have a BBQ, you can grill the prawns on a grill pan or under a hot broiler in your oven.
