Basic Pound Cake Recipe

Posted on May 30, 2025

Pound Cake is a classic type of cake that originated in Europe and gets its name from its traditional recipe — one pound each of four main ingredients: flour, butter, eggs, and sugar. It’s known for being rich, dense, and buttery, with a fine crumb and a golden crust.

🍰 Basic Pound Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs (room temperature)

  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

  • 1/2 tsp baking powder (optional, for a lighter texture)

  • 2–3 tbsp milk or cream (optional, for moisture)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease and flour a loaf or bundt pan.

  2. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 4–5 minutes).

  3. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

  4. Mix in vanilla extract, if using.

  5. Sift flour with salt (and baking powder, if using). Add to the batter in batches, mixing just until combined.

  6. Stir in milk or cream for a softer texture, if desired.

  7. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.

  8. Bake for 60–75 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  9. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on a wire rack.

🍋 Variations:

  • Lemon Pound Cake – Add 1 tbsp lemon zest and 2 tbsp lemon juice.

  • Marble Pound Cake – Mix in a portion of chocolate batter for a swirl effect.

  • Vanilla Glaze – Mix powdered sugar with milk and vanilla extract for a drizzle.
