Add Lemon to Your Washing Machine and See the Magic!

Posted on June 28, 2025

Using lemon in your washing machine is a natural and effective cleaning hack that can brighten whites, remove odors, and even help descale your machine. Here’s a detailed recipe and guide on how to do it safely and effectively.

🍋 Lemon Washing Machine Magic Recipe

🧺 Purpose:

  • Naturally whiten clothes

  • Remove odor and bacteria

  • Descale and deodorize the washing machine

  • Environmentally friendly alternative to harsh chemicals

🔸 Ingredients:

  • 2–4 lemons (medium-sized)

  • 1–2 cups of lemon juice (if using bottled, ensure it’s 100% lemon juice)

  • Optional: ½ cup baking soda (for extra whitening or deodorizing)

  • Optional: Essential oil (e.g., lavender, tea tree – for fragrance)

🧼 How to Use:

🔹 For Washing Clothes (Brightening Whites / Deodorizing)

  1. Juice 2–4 lemons to get about 1 cup of lemon juice.

  2. Add the lemon juice to the detergent drawer or directly into the drum.

  3. Optional: Add ½ cup of baking soda to boost stain removal.

  4. Place your white or light-colored laundry in the machine (avoid using this method for dark clothes as lemon can have a mild bleaching effect).

  5. Run a hot water cycle (or the hottest safe setting for your clothes).

  6. Air dry the clothes in sunlight if possible for an extra whitening boost.

🔹 For Cleaning the Washing Machine (Descaling & Deodorizing)

  1. Make sure the washing machine is empty.

  2. Pour 1–2 cups of lemon juice directly into the drum.

  3. Optional: Add ½ cup of baking soda to the drum or detergent drawer for extra cleaning power.

  4. Run a long, hot water cycle (use the machine’s self-clean or tub clean setting if available).

  5. Leave the door open to air dry the interior afterward.

💡 Tips:

  • Do this once a month to keep your washer clean and smelling fresh.

  • Lemon is especially effective against mildew, mold smell, and soap scum buildup.

  • Always spot test if unsure about fabric compatibility.

⚠️ Caution:

  • Avoid using lemon juice on delicate fabrics, silk, or dark clothes—the citric acid might cause fading.

  • Don’t overuse lemon on rubber seals—it can wear them down over time.
