Crock Pot Cubed Steak

Posted on August 5, 2025

Here’s a recipe for Crock Pot Cubed Steak — tender, flavorful, and easy to make in your slow cooker.

Crock Pot Cubed Steak Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 cubed steaks (about 1/2 inch thick)

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or cream of onion soup)

  • 1 cup beef broth (or water with beef bouillon)

  • 1 packet onion soup mix (optional but recommended)

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil (for browning)

  • Fresh parsley or thyme for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Brown the Cubed Steaks (Optional but recommended):
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season the cubed steaks lightly with salt and pepper. Brown the steaks on both sides (about 2-3 minutes per side) until nicely browned. This step adds flavor but can be skipped to save time.

  2. Prepare the Crock Pot:
Place the sliced onions and minced garlic at the bottom of the slow cooker.

  3. Add the Cubed Steaks:
Layer the browned (or raw) cubed steaks on top of the onions and garlic.

  4. Mix the Sauce:
In a bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and onion soup mix (if using). Stir well to combine.

  5. Pour the Sauce Over the Steaks:
Pour the sauce evenly over the cubed steaks and onions.

  6. Cook:
Cover and cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours, or on High for 3 to 4 hours. The meat should be tender and the sauce thickened.

  7. Check and Adjust:
About 30 minutes before serving, check the consistency of the sauce. If it’s too thin, you can mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and stir it into the slow cooker to thicken.

  8. Serve:
Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme if desired. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Tips:

  • For extra flavor, add sliced mushrooms or bell peppers along with the onions.

  • If you prefer a richer gravy, stir in a splash of heavy cream or sour cream at the end.

  • Cubed steak is a budget-friendly cut but benefits greatly from slow cooking to become tender.
