Southern Fried Salmon Patties

Posted on July 28, 2025

Here’s a classic Southern Fried Salmon Patties recipe—crispy on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside. These are quick to make and deeply comforting!

🐟 Southern Fried Salmon Patties

Ingredients:

  • 1 (14.75 oz) can pink salmon (with bones and skin, or boneless if preferred)

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion

  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper (optional)

  • 1/2 cup cornmeal

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp hot sauce (like Crystal or Tabasco)

  • 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning (or Cajun seasoning)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 1–2 Tbsp mayonnaise (optional for extra moisture)

  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Prep the salmon:

    • Open the can and drain the salmon. Gently remove large bones if desired (they’re edible and soften when cooked).

    • Flake the salmon with a fork in a mixing bowl.

  2. Mix the patties:

    • Add the egg, chopped onion, bell pepper (if using), cornmeal, flour, hot sauce, seasoning, and a bit of salt and pepper.

    • Mix until just combined. If it seems too dry, add a spoonful of mayo or a splash of milk.

  3. Form patties:

    • Shape into 6–8 small patties (about 2–3 inches wide). Let them rest for a few minutes.

  4. Fry:

    • Heat 1/4 inch of vegetable oil in a cast iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat.

    • Once the oil is hot (about 350°F / 175°C), fry patties in batches for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  5. Drain and serve:

    • Place on a paper towel–lined plate to drain.

    • Serve hot with hot sauce, tartar sauce, or a side of grits, collard greens, or cornbread.

🔁 Tips & Variations:

  • Make it spicy: Add minced jalapeño or extra hot sauce to the mix.

  • Add herbs: A little chopped parsley or green onion gives freshness.

  • Crispier crust: Lightly dredge formed patties in cornmeal before frying.

  • Air fryer option: Spray patties with oil and air fry at 400°F for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway.
