Here’s a simple DIY Borax Crystals recipe you can try at home using common materials. It’s a great science experiment for kids and adults alike!
🧪 Borax Crystal Recipe
✅ Materials Needed:
-
3 tablespoons of Borax powder (found in the laundry aisle)
-
1 cup of boiling water
-
A glass jar or clear container
-
A pipe cleaner (or string, or another item you want to crystallize)
-
A pencil or stick (to suspend the item in the jar)
-
String (if not using a pipe cleaner)
-
Optional: Food coloring (for colored crystals)
🧷 Instructions:
-
Shape the Item (optional):
Twist the pipe cleaner into a shape (e.g., star, heart, snowflake). It should fit inside the jar without touching the sides or bottom. -
Boil the Water:
Bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Carefully pour it into the jar. -
Dissolve Borax:
Stir in 3 tablespoons of Borax powder into the hot water. Keep stirring until the Borax is completely dissolved. The solution should look clear (a little cloudiness is okay). -
Add Color (optional):
Add a few drops of food coloring if desired. -
Suspend the Shape:
Tie the pipe cleaner (or object) to a pencil or stick and rest it across the top of the jar so the shape hangs freely in the solution. -
Let it Sit:
Leave the jar undisturbed overnight. Crystals will begin to form in a few hours and continue to grow. -
Remove and Dry:
The next day, gently remove the shape and let it dry on a paper towel.
🧠 How It Works:
As the hot Borax solution cools, it becomes supersaturated. The Borax starts to come out of the solution and forms solid crystals on the pipe cleaner or other surfaces.
