Pepper Jack Cheese Stuffed Fried Okra

Here’s a tasty Pepper Jack Cheese Stuffed Fried Okra recipe for you! Crispy, cheesy, and a little spicy — perfect as a snack or side.


Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fresh okra pods (medium size, about 3–4 inches)

  • 4 oz Pepper Jack cheese (cut into small sticks or cubes)

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 1 cup cornmeal

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for extra heat)

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • Vegetable oil (for frying)


Instructions:

  1. Prep the Okra:

    • Wash and dry the okra pods.

    • Carefully slice each okra pod lengthwise without cutting all the way through — create a pocket for the cheese.

  2. Stuff the Cheese:

    • Insert a small piece or stick of Pepper Jack cheese into the pocket of each okra pod. Be gentle to avoid breaking the okra.

  3. Batter Setup:

    • In a shallow bowl, pour the buttermilk.

    • In another bowl, mix together cornmeal, flour, garlic powder, smoked paprika, cayenne (if using), salt, and pepper.

  4. Coat the Okra:

    • Dip each stuffed okra pod into the buttermilk, then dredge it thoroughly in the cornmeal mixture, pressing lightly to adhere.

  5. Heat the Oil:

    • Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or frying pan (about 1-2 inches deep).

    • Heat oil to 350°F (175°C). You can test by dropping a bit of batter in — it should sizzle and float.

  6. Fry the Okra:

    • Carefully place the coated stuffed okra pods into the hot oil, frying in batches.

    • Fry for about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until golden brown and crispy.

    • Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

  7. Serve:

    • Serve hot with ranch dressing, spicy mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce.
