The Pizza Burger Pie is a delicious hybrid of pizza, burger, and pie—it’s like an Italian-American fusion comfort food. Here’s a recipe to make your own:

Pizza Burger Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the crust:

    • 1 can (13.8 oz) refrigerated pizza dough (or homemade dough if preferred)

  • For the filling:

    • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey, for a lighter option)

    • 1/2 cup chopped onion

    • 2 cloves garlic, minced

    • 1/2 tsp dried oregano

    • 1/2 tsp dried basil

    • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional for heat)

    • 1/2 cup pizza sauce (store-bought or homemade)

    • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

    • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for extra cheesiness)

    • 1/2 cup pepperoni slices (optional, but adds that pizza vibe!)

    • Salt and pepper to taste

  • For the top:

    • 1 egg (for egg wash)

    • Parmesan cheese, for sprinkling (optional)

    • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Prepare the filling:

    • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned and crumbled (about 6-8 minutes).

    • Add chopped onions and garlic, and cook until softened (about 3 minutes).

    • Stir in the oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Mix in the pizza sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.

    • If you’re using pepperoni, you can add them to the filling at this stage, or save them for layering later.

  3. Assemble the pie:

    • Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish or deep-dish pizza pan. Press the dough into the bottom and up the sides.

    • Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce over the bottom of the dough.

    • Spoon the beef and onion mixture into the dough, spreading it evenly.

    • Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese evenly over the top. You can also add extra pepperoni slices here for that classic pizza touch.

  4. Top the pie:

    • Roll out a second sheet of pizza dough and cover the filling. Trim the edges to fit, and then pinch the top and bottom dough layers together to seal.

    • Make a few slits in the top of the dough to allow steam to escape.

    • Beat the egg and brush it over the top crust to give it a golden, shiny finish. Sprinkle a little Parmesan cheese on top if you like.

  5. Bake:

    • Place the pie in the oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden and crispy.

    • If the top starts to brown too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil and continue baking.

  6. Serve:

    • Let the pizza burger pie cool for about 5 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
