TENNESSEE ONIONS

Posted on June 24, 2025

ere’s a classic Tennessee Onions recipe—simple, Southern comfort food at its best. This dish features sweet onions smothered in butter, cheese, and seasoning, then baked until golden and tender. Great as a side dish for grilled meats or barbecue.

🍽️ Tennessee Onions Recipe

🧅 Ingredients:

  • 2–3 large Vidalia or other sweet onions (sliced into ¼-inch thick rings)

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

  • 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded (or mozzarella for a milder taste)

  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning (optional)

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • Optional: chopped parsley for garnish

🔥 Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Prepare the Onions
Peel and slice the onions into rings, about ¼ inch thick. Separate the rings and layer them in a greased 9×13 baking dish.

  3. Season & Butter
Sprinkle the onion layers with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Dot the butter evenly over the top.

  4. Add Cheese
Sprinkle cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses generously over the onions. Top with Parmesan cheese.

  5. Bake
Cover loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes, then uncover and bake another 15–20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden and the onions are soft.

  6. Serve
Let cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

🔄 Variations:

  • Add crispy bacon bits on top for a smoky touch.

  • Swap cheeses (pepper jack for heat, gouda for richness).

  • Use red onions for a slightly sharper flavor.
