Classic Strawberry Trifle
Ingredients:
-
1 pound (about 450g) fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
-
1/4 cup granulated sugar
-
1 store-bought or homemade sponge cake or pound cake, cut into cubes (about 6 cups)
-
2 cups vanilla custard or pudding
-
2 cups whipped cream (freshly whipped or store-bought)
-
Optional: 1/4 cup sherry or strawberry liqueur (for soaking cake, if desired)
-
Optional garnish: fresh mint leaves, extra strawberries
Instructions:
-
Prep Strawberries:
In a bowl, toss the sliced strawberries with sugar. Let them sit for about 15-20 minutes to macerate and release their juices. -
Prepare Cake Layer:
If using sherry or liqueur, sprinkle or brush it lightly over the cake cubes. -
Assemble the Trifle:
-
In a large clear glass bowl or trifle dish, start with a layer of cake cubes.
-
Spoon some of the strawberry juice over the cake to moisten it.
-
Add a layer of macerated strawberries on top of the cake.
-
Pour a layer of vanilla custard over the strawberries.
-
Add a layer of whipped cream.
-
-
Repeat:
Repeat the layers (cake, strawberries with juice, custard, whipped cream) until you fill the dish, finishing with a whipped cream layer. -
Garnish:
Decorate the top with whole strawberries and mint leaves for a fresh look. -
Chill:
Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. This helps the flavors meld and the trifle set.
