Philly Steak Cheese Fries Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the fries:

    • 4 large russet potatoes (or 1 bag frozen fries)

    • 2 tbsp olive oil (if making fries from scratch)

    • Salt and pepper to taste

  • For the Philly steak:

    • 1/2 lb thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin steak (you can buy pre-sliced or slice it yourself)

    • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

    • 1 small green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)

    • 1-2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter

    • Salt and pepper to taste

    • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)

  • Cheese:

    • 4 slices provolone cheese or

    • 1 cup shredded American cheese or

    • 1/2 cup cheese sauce (Cheez Whiz or homemade)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Fries

  • If using fresh potatoes:

    1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).

    2. Wash, peel (optional), and cut potatoes into fries (about 1/4 inch thick).

    3. Soak fries in cold water for 30 minutes to remove excess starch. Drain and pat dry.

    4. Toss fries with olive oil, salt, and pepper.

    5. Spread fries on a baking sheet in a single layer.

    6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.

  • If using frozen fries: Cook according to package instructions for crispy fries.

2. Cook the Steak and Veggies

  1. Heat 1 tbsp oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  2. Add onions and green peppers. Sauté for 4-5 minutes until softened.

  3. Push veggies to the side, add steak slices.

  4. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

  5. Cook steak, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked through (about 4-6 minutes).

3. Assemble the Cheese Fries

  1. Spread cooked fries on a serving plate.

  2. Top fries with the cooked steak, onions, and peppers.

  3. Lay cheese slices over the steak and fries.

  4. Cover the plate with a lid or aluminum foil to let cheese melt (about 2 minutes).

  5. Alternatively, drizzle with warm cheese sauce.

4. Serve

  • Serve immediately, optionally topped with jalapeños, hot sauce, or extra seasoning.

Tips:

  • Thinly sliced steak is key for that authentic Philly cheesesteak texture.

  • You can also add mushrooms or swap green peppers for banana peppers.

  • If you want to go fully classic Philly, use Cheez Whiz instead of sliced cheese.
