Why this works:

  • Onions contain compounds like quercetin and sulfur which have natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. They help thin mucus and soothe irritated airways.

  • Bay leaves have eugenol and other essential oils that can act as mild expectorants, helping to loosen mucus and calm coughs.

  • Honey and lemon (optional) add soothing and antibacterial benefits to support healing.


Ingredients:

  • 1 medium onion (red or yellow onion preferred for stronger flavor and medicinal effect)

  • 3 dried bay leaves

  • 2 cups (about 480 ml) of water

  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (optional)


Equipment:

  • Saucepan or pot

  • Strainer or fine sieve

  • Spoon and cup


Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Onion

  • Peel the onion and chop it into small pieces or slices. Smaller pieces help release more of the onion’s beneficial compounds into the tea.

Step 2: Boil Water

  • Pour 2 cups of fresh water into a saucepan.

  • Bring the water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.

Step 3: Add Onion and Bay Leaves

  • Once the water is boiling, add the chopped onion and 3 dried bay leaves to the saucepan.

  • Stir briefly to combine.

Step 4: Simmer the Tea

  • Lower the heat to a gentle simmer.

  • Let the onion and bay leaves simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.

  • During this time, the water will extract the active compounds from the onion and bay leaves, creating a medicinal infusion.

  • The water should reduce slightly, and you will notice a strong onion aroma.

Step 5: Strain the Tea

  • Remove the saucepan from heat.

  • Using a fine strainer, pour the tea into a cup to remove onion pieces and bay leaves.

  • Squeeze any liquid left in the onion pieces gently to get the maximum flavor.

Step 6: Add Honey and Lemon (Optional)

  • Stir in 1 tablespoon of honey to add sweetness and enhance soothing effects.

  • Add 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice for a vitamin C boost and to improve taste.

Step 7: Drink the Tea Warm

  • Sip the tea slowly while it is warm.

  • Drink 2–3 times a day for best relief.


Tips for Use:

  • Drink this tea when you start experiencing a cough or throat irritation.

  • Avoid adding honey if you are allergic or if giving to children under 1 year old.

  • If symptoms persist for more than a week or worsen, consult a healthcare professional.
