Hair Coloring with Coffee & Indigo Powder

Posted on June 2, 2025

Here’s a detailed, natural recipe to change gray hair to black using coffee and indigo powder. This method uses plant-based ingredients, and although results vary depending on your hair type and how often it’s applied, it’s a popular natural approach.

๐ŸŒฟ Natural Hair Coloring with Coffee & Indigo Powder

๐Ÿงด Ingredients:

Step 1: Coffee Hair Dye Base

  • 2 tablespoons organic instant coffee or fresh ground coffee

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (optional โ€“ adds moisture and shine)

  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (optional โ€“ helps with pH balance and color hold)

Step 2: Indigo Dye Mix

  • 100g indigo powder (adjust based on hair length)

  • Warm water โ€“ enough to make a paste (not hot!)

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional โ€“ helps bind color better)

  • 1 teaspoon corn starch or yogurt (optional โ€“ to improve consistency)

๐Ÿ”ง Tools Needed:

  • Glass or plastic mixing bowl (avoid metal)

  • Spoon or whisk (non-metal)

  • Gloves

  • Shower cap or wrap

  • Old towel (to protect clothes)

  • Applicator brush (optional)

โœจ Step-by-Step Instructions:

๐Ÿ”น Step 1: Coffee Rinse / Base Prep

  1. Boil 1 cup of water.

  2. Add 2 tablespoons of coffee. Let it simmer for 5โ€“10 minutes.

  3. Cool the mixture to lukewarm.

  4. Optionally, add 1 tbsp coconut oil and 1 tsp apple cider vinegar.

  5. Use this strong coffee as a hair rinse or mix it with your indigo paste later.

๐Ÿ”น Step 2: Indigo Paste Preparation

  1. In a non-metal bowl, mix indigo powder with lukewarm coffee (or plain warm water) to form a thick paste.

  2. Add salt to enhance color binding if desired.

  3. Let the paste sit for 15โ€“30 minutes to activate (unlike henna, indigo needs minimal oxidizing time).

  4. Use immediately for best color results.

๐Ÿ”น Step 3: Application

  1. Wash hair with a mild, sulfate-free shampoo (no conditioner).

  2. Towel-dry until just damp.

  3. Section your hair.

  4. Wearing gloves, apply the indigo-coffee paste evenly from roots to tips.

  5. Wrap your hair in a shower cap or cling film to retain moisture.

  6. Leave it on for 1โ€“2 hours (longer = deeper color).

๐Ÿ”น Step 4: Rinsing

  1. Rinse hair with cool to lukewarm water only โ€” do not use shampoo for 24โ€“48 hours.

  2. After that period, wash with a mild shampoo and condition normally.

๐Ÿ•“ Frequency:

  • Use weekly or bi-weekly for best results.

  • After 2โ€“3 applications, gray hair should turn to a natural dark brown to black tone.

  • Color deepens with each use.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips:

  • Do a strand test before full application.

  • Avoid mixing indigo with lemon or acidic ingredients (it prefers a neutral or slightly alkaline pH).

  • For even deeper black, do a two-step process: first apply henna (reddish base), rinse, then indigo.
