Homemade Soft Pretzels

Here’s a classic Homemade Soft Pretzels recipe that’s easy to follow and delivers delicious, golden, chewy pretzels just like the ones at the mall!


🥨 Homemade Soft Pretzels

✅ Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 1½ cups warm water (110°F / 45°C)

  • 2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

For Boiling:

  • 10 cups water

  • â…” cup baking soda

For Topping:

  • 1 egg yolk beaten with 1 tbsp water (egg wash)

  • Coarse sea salt


🔧 Instructions:

  1. Activate Yeast:

    • In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.

  2. Make the Dough:

    • Add salt, melted butter, and flour (1 cup at a time), mixing until a dough forms.

    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 7–8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

    • Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled.

  3. Shape Pretzels:

    • Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

    • Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.

    • Roll each piece into a 20–24 inch rope. Form a U-shape, cross the ends, and twist to shape into a pretzel.

  4. Boil in Baking Soda Water:

    • In a large pot, bring 10 cups water and baking soda to a boil.

    • Carefully drop each pretzel into the water for 30 seconds. Use a slotted spatula to remove and place on the baking sheet.

  5. Egg Wash & Salt:

    • Brush each pretzel with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.

  6. Bake:

    • Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.

  7. Cool & Serve:

    • Let cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm with mustard, cheese sauce, or your favorite dip!


🧀 Optional Dips:

  • Beer cheese

  • Spicy mustard

  • Cream cheese icing (for sweet pretzels)
