Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Here’s a classic Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy recipe — rich, comforting, and easy to make:


🍽️ Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Ingredients:

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 works best)

  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1/4 cup milk

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp mustard (optional)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper to taste


Instructions:

1. Make the Hamburger Steaks:

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and mustard (if using).

  2. Mix gently until combined — don’t overwork the meat.

  3. Form into 4 oval-shaped patties, about ¾ inch thick.

2. Sear the Patties:

  1. Heat a skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium-high heat. Add a little oil if needed.

  2. Sear the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, until nicely browned. They don’t need to be fully cooked through.

  3. Remove patties and set aside.

3. Make the Onion Gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Add butter and sliced onions.

  2. Cook, stirring frequently, until onions are soft and golden brown (about 10 minutes).

  3. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to cook out the raw taste.

  4. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring. Add Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened (5–7 minutes).

  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

4. Simmer Together:

  1. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.

  2. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes, or until patties are cooked through (160°F internal temp).


Serving Suggestions:

Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles with a side of green beans or steamed broccoli.
