Hamburger Steak with Creamy Onion Gravy

Ingredients:

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 cup milk

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 tbsp oil or butter (for frying)

For the Creamy Onion Gravy:

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper to taste


Instructions:

  1. Make the hamburger steaks:

    • In a bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk; let soak for 5 minutes.

    • Add ground beef, finely chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

    • Mix gently until combined, but don’t overwork the meat.

    • Divide mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties.

  2. Cook the hamburger steaks:

    • Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

    • Add patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.

    • Remove steaks from skillet and set aside, keeping warm.

  3. Make the creamy onion gravy:

    • In the same skillet, add butter and melt over medium heat.

    • Add sliced onions and cook until softened and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.

    • Sprinkle flour over onions and stir well, cooking for about 1-2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.

    • Slowly whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.

    • Stir in cream and Worcestershire sauce.

    • Let the gravy simmer gently until thickened, about 5 minutes.

    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  4. Serve:

    • Place hamburger steaks on plates and spoon creamy onion gravy over the top.

    • Serve with mashed potatoes or rice and your favorite veggies.
