Nun’s Puffs

Posted on May 30, 2025

Sure! Here’s a classic recipe for Nun’s Puffs—a light, airy, sweet fried dough treat that’s crispy on the outside and soft inside. They’re sometimes called “Nun’s Farts” too, a funny old name!

Nun’s Puffs Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 4 large eggs

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil works well)

  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the dough:
In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat.

  2. Add flour:
Once boiling, remove from heat and quickly stir in all the flour at once. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.

  3. Cool slightly:
Let the dough cool for about 5 minutes, so it’s warm but not hot.

  4. Add eggs:
Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. The dough will look like a thick batter and should be smooth and glossy.

  5. Heat oil:
Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).

  6. Fry puffs:
Using two spoons or a small ice cream scoop, drop spoonfuls of dough into hot oil. Don’t overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and puffed.

  7. Drain and dust:
Remove puffs with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Serve warm and enjoy these light, sweet treats!
