Classic Homemade Shortbread

Posted on May 29, 2025

Here’s a classic homemade shortbread recipe — buttery, crumbly, and simple to make. Just three core ingredients!

🍪 Classic Homemade Shortbread

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • ½ cup granulated sugar (plus extra for sprinkling)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ¼ tsp salt (optional, if using unsalted butter)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, use a hand mixer (or a stand mixer) to beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes). Add vanilla if using.

  3. Add flour: Gradually add the flour (and salt, if using) and mix until just combined. The dough may be slightly crumbly — that’s okay. Press it together with your hands.

  4. Shape the dough:

    • Option 1: Press the dough into an 8×8-inch pan, prick with a fork, and cut into squares after baking.

    • Option 2: Roll the dough out to ½ inch thick and cut into shapes using cookie cutters.

    • Option 3: Form into a log, chill, and slice into rounds.

  5. Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden. Do not overbake.

  6. Cool and serve: Let cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Sprinkle lightly with granulated sugar while warm if desired.

Optional Add-ins:

  • Chocolate chips or a chocolate dip

  • Lemon zest or orange zest

  • A pinch of cinnamon or cardamom

  • Finely chopped nuts
