Posted on September 20, 2025

Here is a  Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole recipe — it has all the flavors of classic chicken cordon bleu but in an easier, layered casserole format. It’s creamy, cheesy, comforting, and perfect for a weeknight dinner or a potluck!

🧀 Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole Recipe

📋 Ingredients:

For the Casserole:

  • 3 cups cooked chicken breast, shredded or diced (rotisserie chicken works great)

  • 8 oz ham, diced (use deli ham or leftover baked ham)

  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese (or Gruyère if you prefer)

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella (optional, for extra creaminess)

  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

For the Cream Sauce:

  • 4 tablespoons butter

  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)

  • 1 cup chicken broth

  • 1/2 cup sour cream or heavy cream

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko for crunch)

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)

🍳 Instructions:

1. Preheat Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or a little butter.

2. Make the Cream Sauce:

  • In a medium saucepan, melt 4 tbsp butter over medium heat.

  • Whisk in 4 tbsp flour and cook for about 1 minute to make a roux (this removes the raw flour taste).

  • Slowly whisk in 2 cups milk and 1 cup chicken broth.

  • Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens (about 5–7 minutes).

  • Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup sour cream or heavy cream, 1 tbsp Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

  • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

3. Layer the Casserole:

  • In the prepared baking dish:

    1. Spread the cooked chicken evenly on the bottom.

    2. Top with the diced ham.

    3. Pour the cream sauce evenly over the chicken and ham.

    4. Sprinkle the Swiss cheese (and mozzarella if using) evenly over the top.

4. Prepare the Topping:

  • In a small bowl, mix:

    • 1 cup breadcrumbs

    • 2 tbsp melted butter

    • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese

    • Parsley if using

  • Sprinkle this topping evenly over the casserole.

5. Bake:

  • Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the top is golden brown.

  • If the topping isn’t browned enough, broil for the last 1–2 minutes (watch closely!).

6. Serve:

  • Let it rest for about 5–10 minutes before serving.

  • Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve with steamed green beans, roasted broccoli, or a crisp green salad.

  • Garlic mashed potatoes or rice are great sides to soak up that creamy sauce.

🧊 Storage:

  • Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

  • Freezer: You can freeze the assembled, unbaked casserole for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before baking.
