Here’s a recipe for Southern Style Cheeseburger Pie — a hearty, comforting dish that’s like a cheeseburger in pie form, loaded with seasoned ground beef, cheese, and a buttery crust. Perfect for family dinners!


Southern Style Cheeseburger Pie

Ingredients:

For the crust:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed

  • 4-5 tbsp ice-cold water

For the filling:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 is good for flavor)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheddar and American cheese)

  • 1/2 cup dill pickles, chopped (optional but adds that classic burger flavor)

  • 1/2 cup ketchup

  • 2 tbsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

  • 1 tbsp butter (optional, for brushing top crust)


Instructions:

Step 1: Make the pie crust

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.

  2. Add the cold cubed butter. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs (pea-sized pieces).

  3. Gradually add ice water, 1 tbsp at a time, stirring until the dough begins to come together. Be careful not to add too much water.

  4. Gather dough into a ball, flatten into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the filling

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.

  2. Add chopped onion and garlic, sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.

  3. Drain excess fat if necessary.

  4. Stir in ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.

  5. Remove from heat and mix in the chopped pickles (if using) and half of the shredded cheese. Set aside.

Step 3: Assemble the pie

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish (bottom and top crust).

  3. Place the bottom crust in the pie dish, trimming any excess.

  4. Spoon the beef mixture evenly into the crust.

  5. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top of the beef.

  6. Cover with the top crust, trim excess dough, and crimp edges to seal.

  7. Cut a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

  8. Beat the egg with 1 tbsp water and brush over the top crust for a golden finish.

  9. Optionally, dot the top with small pieces of butter for extra richness.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly.

  2. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing.


Serving suggestions:

  • Serve with a simple side salad or crispy fries.

  • Add a dollop of ketchup or mustard on the side for dipping.

  • A pickle spear on the plate enhances that classic cheeseburger vibe.
