Kentucky Butter Cake Cookies

Posted on August 17, 2025

Here’s a  recipe for Kentucky Butter Cake Cookies, inspired by the rich, buttery flavor of the classic Southern cake. These cookies are soft, tender, and glazed with a sweet buttery sauce for that signature melt-in-your-mouth effect.

🧈 Kentucky Butter Cake Cookies Recipe

🍪 Yields: About 24 cookies

🕒 Prep Time: 15 minutes | Bake Time: 10–12 minutes | Total Time: ~30 minutes

📝 Ingredients

For the Cookies:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon salt

For the Butter Glaze:

  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

🔪 Instructions

1. Prepare the Cookie Dough

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy (2–3 minutes).

  3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. Do not overmix.

2. Scoop and Bake

  1. Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop rounded spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart.

  2. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until edges are just lightly golden. The centers will look soft — that’s okay!

  3. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

3. Make the Butter Glaze

  1. While cookies are baking, make the glaze:

    • In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter, then add sugar and water.

    • Stir continuously until sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth — don’t let it boil.

    • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

4. Glaze the Cookies

  1. While cookies are still warm, brush or spoon the glaze over each cookie.

  2. Allow glaze to soak in and cool — it will form a slightly crisp, sugary crust as it sets.

🍽 Tips & Variations

  • For extra richness: Add a dash of rum or almond extract to the glaze.

  • Dust with powdered sugar after glazing for a pretty finish.

  • Storage: Keep cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days. They also freeze well (glazed or unglazed).
