DIY Aroma Stones

Posted on August 3, 2025

Here’s a  DIY Aroma Stones recipe, also known as fragrance stones or diffuser stones. These are decorative, porous stones that absorb and slowly release essential oils, making them great for natural home scenting without heat or electricity.

🪨 DIY AROMA STONES RECIPE

🧪 Ingredients:

  1. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) – ½ cup

  2. Cornstarch (or arrowroot powder) – ¼ cup

  3. Water – ¼ cup

  4. Essential oil(s) of your choice – 10–20 drops

  5. Optional:

    • Natural food coloring or mica powder (for color)

    • Silicone molds (for shaping)

    • Dried herbs or flower petals (for aesthetics)

🛠 Supplies:

  • Mixing bowl

  • Saucepan or microwave-safe container

  • Spoon or spatula

  • Silicone mold or mini muffin tin

  • Measuring cups

  • Dropper (optional, for essential oils)

🔬 Instructions:

1. Create the mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine:

  • ½ cup baking soda

  • ¼ cup cornstarch

Mix the dry ingredients well to ensure even distribution.

2. Add water and heat

  • Add ¼ cup of water to the dry mix and stir until smooth.

  • Heat the mixture gently:

    • Stovetop: Pour into a non-stick saucepan and stir continuously over low heat.

    • Microwave: Heat in 15–30 second intervals, stirring between.

You’re aiming for a thick dough consistency — like playdough. It should pull away from the sides of the bowl or pan.

⚠️ Do not overcook, or the dough may dry out and become crumbly.

3. Cool the dough

  • Let the dough cool slightly so it’s safe to handle.

  • Once cool, knead briefly for a smooth texture.

4. Add essential oils and optional ingredients

  • Add 10–20 drops of essential oil(s) and knead into the dough.

  • Add colorants or dried botanicals if using.

📝 Tip: If you want to use multiple scents, divide the dough and add different oils to each portion.

5. Shape the stones

  • Press the dough into silicone molds or shape small balls/discs by hand.

  • You can also roll and cut out shapes using cookie cutters.

6. Dry completely

Let the stones dry:

  • Air dry for 24–48 hours (preferred for even drying).

  • Optional oven method: Bake at 150°F (65°C) for 1–2 hours, flipping halfway.

Fully dry stones will feel hard and chalky.

🧴 To Use:

  • Place a stone in a dish or sachet and set it in a drawer, car, bathroom, or near your desk.

  • Refresh with 2–3 drops of essential oil every week or as needed.

💡 Customization Ideas:

  • Lavender + chamomile for calming bedroom stones

  • Lemon + eucalyptus for energizing kitchen or office use

  • Peppermint for car fresheners

  • Add activated charcoal to help neutralize odors
