Here’s a classic recipe for Hungarian Snow Crescents (Hókifli) — delicious crescent-shaped cookies dusted with powdered sugar, perfect for holidays or any special occasion!

Hungarian Snow Crescents (Hókifli) Recipe

Ingredients:w2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

  • 1 cup (100 g) ground walnuts or almonds (optional, but traditional)

  • 1/3 cup (40 g) powdered sugar (plus extra for dusting)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract or 1 packet vanilla sugar

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, combine the flour, ground nuts, powdered sugar, and salt.

  3. Cut in butter: Add the cold butter cubes and work them into the flour mixture using your fingertips or a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Add vanilla: Stir in the vanilla extract or vanilla sugar.

  5. Form dough: Quickly knead the mixture together to form a soft dough. If too dry, add a teaspoon of cold water.

  6. Shape crescents: Take small pieces of dough and roll them into little logs about 2-3 inches long. Curve each log into a crescent shape and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

  7. Bake: Bake for 15-18 minutes, until the cookies are just starting to turn golden at the edges.

  8. Cool and dust: Let the cookies cool slightly on the baking sheet, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. While still warm, dust generously with powdered sugar — the “snow” effect!
